The worldwide mission of Civitan International is to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs, with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.
Who does your organization benefit/serve?
Individual clubs are very hyper-local in that they identify needs in their own communities, neighborhoods, states or countries and develop a plan to make a difference in the lives near them. On a larger scale, our clubs—consisting of 40,000 members in 50 nations—raise money for our research center based at UAB. The research center was created with a $20 million pledge from Civitan and it conducts research in the areas of autism, down syndrome, Alzheimers and many other disorders that affect 1 in 10 people worldwide.
What makes your organization unique?
We were founded in Birmingham. We are 100 years old this year. We were the first of the larger service clubs to admit minorities, we were the first to admit women and one of the first, if not the first, to go international. We encourage people to seek ways to make the world around them better, so each club is a little different than the next.

Since 1917, we have been dedicated to Birmingham and have spread our message of service and our hometown values worldwide. We have had US Presidents, famous inventors, sports stars and Hollywood legends as members but there is no greater satisfaction than seeing a smile from a child or anyone impacted by a project. Our service is what drives us. As we move into our second century, we have a chance to impact lives around the world but first we have to reach more people willing to work to make this a better place.
