The mission of One Place is to provide coordinated services to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault through a multi-disciplinary team of agency professionals who are co-located and working together under one roof.
One Place offers the following services:
- legal services (civil and criminal)
- court advocacy
- emergency and transitional housing placement
- public benefits assistance
- safety planning
Who does your organization benefit/serve?
The survivors of domestic and sexual violence who receive services from One Place remind us daily of the difficulties in navigating a maze of services scattered in different locations across our city. Given the size of our metropolitan area and the lack of access to transportation, this may be the greatest barrier to seeking services. Simply put, moving from agency to agency, and re-telling the story of abuse time and again wears down victims of crime who have already been traumatized. Some survivors become so frustrated that they stop seeking help altogether, returning to a dangerous situation or abusive partner out of desperation and, in some cases, to avoid homelessness.
This is the reason One Place exists. We know that, for many whom we serve, the clock is ticking. As we have learned, sometimes it is literally a life or death situation. If a victim or survivor has only one chance to get one place for safety and support, there must be as many necessary resources on hand in one location.
What makes your organization unique?
In 2014, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, the YWCA Central Alabama, the City of Birmingham – Birmingham Police Department, and the Crisis Center, Inc. entered into a Memorandum of Understanding creating One Place Metro Alabama Family Justice Center. The fact that One Place is a collaboration between law enforcement, prosecution, and social services certainly is our defining characteristic. This public-private partnership is unprecedented in Jefferson County and has the potential to be a game-changer for the Greater Birmingham area.

Honestly, it’s the victims and survivors we serve who deserve to have access to the information, resources, and support offered at One Place. But they have to know that we are here and that our doors are open. Admittedly, the four partnering agencies took a risk in moving away from traditional, individualized service delivery to form One Place. We don’t take that lightly, and we recognize that we have to be strategic, intentional, and sensitive as we continue to grow and foster collaboration in the Birmingham community.
