Digital Marketing: Why Desktop Alone Won’t Cut It

Did you know that we have reached the era of “mobile first”? It feels like a milestone for humanity, and in many ways, it is. We live in a world where we go to our phones for information much more often than we go to our desktop computers (if we even have one), and that means that businesses must adapt or risk being left behind.

How Much Time Are People Spending on Mobile?

The short answer is around five hours a day, and a lot of that is spent watching videos.
The intensity of mobile usage varies throughout the day, naturally, but the timing of mobile usage matters a lot when it comes to things like AdWords and display media. Desktop is still important for those with desk jobs because they typically have a workstation at their desk, but in the evenings, the computers are put away in favor of phones or tablets.
If you’re not offering a great mobile experience for your prospective customers, you’re missing out on a lot of opportunity, especially with mobile-only social networks like Snapchat.

How Many People Are Using Mobile Devices?

The number of mobile phone users is set to reach 4.68 billion in 2019, according to statista.com. That’s a lot of people. Additionally, in 2018, more than half of all online traffic came through mobile phones—an increase of 50.3% since 2017. Here in the United States, 57% of all online traffic now comes through mobile. People overwhelmingly use mobile to check email (61% of all opens), with only 15% of email checking based on a desktop.

What Are People Searching For?

According to Google, there has been an 80% increase in mobile searches for “best” in the past two years, with 69% of searchers saying they would be more likely to buy from a company that offers a great mobile experience over another that doesn’t. 51% of mobile users are using their device to discover new brands and products. And today, people are interacting twice as often with brands via their mobile device than anywhere else.
So the answer to the question “What are they searching for?” might actually be a great mobile experience above all else.
