Crisis-Center-GraphicCrisis Center Inc.’s mission is to serve the unmet needs of people experiencing personal crisis or mental health issues and respond with services that promote coping, emotional health and well being.

Who does your organization benefit/serve?

At the Crisis Center, we know that crisis is personally defined. Because personal crisis affects everyone – regardless of economic status, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs or community standing The Crisis Center is available to help all those who are hurting and to end stigma related to mental illness, suicide, and sexual assault. These are unfortunately very real and pervasive issues in our community, but through over 200 volunteers and 32 staff members, the Crisis Center provides direct services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, responding to persons in crisis.

In 2015 alone, we served over 6,350 individuals who have experienced sexual violence, supported 578 individuals at our Piper Place mental health day program centers and responded to more than 8500 callers on our Crisis & Suicide hotline. As we know this is only a fraction of those who are suffering, we continue to try and reach more individuals in the community by expanding our reach and building our presence to help vulnerable populations.

Our education and outreach team works to reduce the impact of crisis related issues in our community with the ultimate goal of preventing rape and suicide through programs that promote individual empowerment and bystander intervention. Our educators work with children from elementary school all the way through college with research supported programming to help them deal with issues ranging from suicide to bullying to having safe relationships. In 2015, we reached 19,570 kids and teens through prevention education and answer calls on our hotlines, Kid’s Help Line and Teen Link.

Our primary service area is Central Alabama, which is defined as the five county area surrounding Birmingham. This includes Blount County, Jefferson County, St. Clair County, Shelby County and Walker County. In addition to the above counties, Rape Response also serves Chilton County.

What makes your organization unique?

The Crisis Center has the benefit of being able to provide services at absolutely no cost to our clients, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. We have a small staff, but are able to provide these services with a crew of 200+ volunteers who give their time, energy and expertise for the benefit of those in our community who are experiencing crisis. Our board of directors is also a very engaged, hands-on board, who work hard to raise funds for our organization as well as give their own time to our clients as volunteers.

The Crisis Center is there for individuals when there is literally no other place to turn. We step in to people’s lives at the most critical moment, often when it is actually a matter of life and death. It isn’t so much that the Crisis Center deserves this makeover, but it is that all those individuals in our community who are experiencing thoughts of suicide, who have serious mental illness that has left them alienated and unable to fully participate in life, those who have experienced sexual assault and are in a state of extreme fear, shame and uncertainty it is these people that deserve your help. By donating your services to the Crisis Center, you are helping them.
