Unless U is committed to serving adults with developmental disabilities and their families through continuing education, life skills, and social skills. Our services create an environment that promotes independence. Unless U envisions a world where adults with developmental disabilities are not seen through the lens of their disability but rather through what they offer their community.
Who does your organization benefit/serve?
Unless U serves Greater Birmingham area adults with developmental disabilities that have aged out of the school system. We serve and benefit both our students and their parents by providing an avenue that furthers education, promotes independence and incorporates the arts.
What makes your organization unique?
What makes our organization unique to the Birmingham area first and foremost is the strength of our education program. Other programs exist to solely foster independence or provide a recreational outlet, but we incorporate all of these to create a college-like experience for our adults. The staff also makes Unless U unique, because they are passionate about what they do and who they serve.
Tell us why your organization deserves to win Uptick’s Marketing Magic City Makeover Competition!
We are a young and emerging nonprofit and a makeover like this would radically better our program. Unless U started in my parent’s house in August of 2014 with my four “founding fathers,” while I met with CPA’s and lawyers to get the ball rolling. In November of 2014, Shades Mountain Baptist Church agreed to lease us classroom space. We opened here in November with 10 students and one staff member. Due to the Lord’s faithfulness, in a little over a year and a half, we have grown to almost 40
students and five staff members. It has been a life changing experience. We have outgrown our space here and are in the process of moving to our first location!
Our program offers a “college like atmosphere” that is ability respectful with classes in math, science, language arts, social studies, bible study, technology and fine arts. There is no program in the area that offers these services for these adults and that is evident by our growth.
Unless U deserves this makeover because we do not have the resources and the means to keep our marketing up to date with our growth. We are in desperate need for guidance and assistance in this way and it would mean the world to us to be considered for this incredible opportunity. For such a new and small nonprofit a makeover like this would do wonders for our organization.
We are humbled and grateful for the opportunity to be considered for Uptick’s Marketing Magic City Makeover. Thank you for taking the time to read our application.
