TikTok’s user base continues to grow, and the average time spent on the app keeps climbing. It’s no longer considered just the dancing app your teenager uses and has evolved into a mainstream channel that many businesses take seriously when it comes to placing ads.
Is TikTok Among Most Effective Advertising for Small Businesses?
Short answer: For a lot of businesses, yes. Long answer: It depends on who you’re trying to reach and what you’re selling.
TikTok’s algorithm still doesn’t care how many followers you have. A brand new account can outperform an established one if the content is good enough. That’s because the innovative ‘For You’ page rewards and prioritizes engagement over history or followers. That’s rare air in advertising, which is known for rewarding the highest bidder.
Cost backs this up, too. Ad prices on TikTok tend to run cheaper than the big platforms, and minimum spend requirements are modest enough at $50 a day and $500 on a campaign, so testing the waters doesn’t require blowing your whole marketing budget.
However, TikTok does still skew younger, and if your customers lean older (60 years and up) or you’re selling complex B2B products and services, it might not be where your ad dollars can best be put to use.
Who Wins with TikTok Ads?
It’s no secret that TikTok rewards certain kinds of businesses more than others, and it’s worth knowing which camp you’re in before you spend your hard-earned dollars.
- Works great: visual products, fashion, beauty, food, fitness, home goods; basically anything you can show and tell in 15 seconds.
- Works fine: local services with a younger customer base, ecommerce with strong creative, software with a clear before-and-after story.
- Might want to skip: complex B2B, big-ticket purchases that need trust built over months, anything that can’t be filmed on a phone without looking like a hostage video.
If you fall into the last bucket, it’s by no means a knock on your business; it simply means your budget belongs somewhere else, and our digital marketing experts here at Uptick Marketing would love to help you figure out where that is.
What About Spark Ads?
If you haven’t heard of Spark Ads, you can think of them as the difference between renting a billboard and asking your most frequent customer to rant and rave about how wonderful you are on camera. Spark Ads takes a real, organic TikTok video, either yours or a creator’s, and turns it into a paid promotion without changing anything. No polished editing or a sales pitch (at least, not the conventional kind). It also lives under the original creator’s handle and displays a small “Sponsored” tag to keep things transparent.
Are they worth it? You tell us. TikTok reports that Spark Ads consistently outperform standard, brand-made ads in competition rate, engagement, and conversions, sometimes by a wide margin. Why such a big difference? Authenticity still reigns supreme on social media. People can spot a polished ad from a mile away, and they’re often not strong enough to stop the scroll. A Spark Ad looks like the content they opened the app for (hint: because it is).
Get Started without Blowing Your Budget
If you’re testing TikTok ads for the first time, try to resist the urge to judge your results after just a few days. Give the algorithm the time it needs to learn who your audience actually is. Pulling the plug early is a common mistake.
A practical road map for your first month advertising on the app could look like this:
- Install your TikTok Pixel and confirm it’s tracking correctly.
- Build a handful of native-style creatives: phone-shot, vertical, no logos on the intro.
- Launch with broad targeting and let the algorithm do the narrowing.
- Give it real time before you judge results, and pump the brakes on what’s not working after you do.
Pro tip: Once you’ve launched your ads, keep an eye on TikTok’s default “smart audience” targeting setting, as it does have the potential to send your ads to the wrong users. Check your audience reports early so you can catch it if it starts to veer into the wrong territory.
Should Your Business Use TikTok Ads?
TikTok can be a great advertising tool for small businesses, but it’s not a yes across the board for everyone. It can be fertile ground if your audience is on the younger side and you’re selling a product that photographs and films well. With a relatively low cost of entry, your business could potentially do really well on the platform.
